Six Sentence Sunday

For these final two weeks of Six Sentence Sunday, I’ll give you teasers from ‘Dream of Paris’ which will be released next month.

Anna is a teacher at a high school, and is trying to quell her attraction to the new Deputy Headteacher, Matt Carlton. This excerpt takes place at the school prom when, to Anna’s delight, she finds herself dancing with Matt – even though they are swaying to the music about a foot away from each other. But then fate steps in -

When a group of girls started to back into them, Matt caught her hand and moved her sideways out of their way. At the same time, he slipped his arm round her and drew her closer. Automatically she brought her hand up to his shoulder, and he swung them both into a pivot, which carried them away from the other dancers.

His leg pressed between hers as they turned, and the melting sensation in her stomach became a flood of arousal. Hot pulses of pleasure throbbed through her, and her mind shut down, allowing a million pinpricks of desire to run riot.

He smiled down at her and his dark eyes softened as his arm tightened around her.

Here’s the (provisional) blurb for 'Dream of Paris':
Anna Richards has a dream of going to live and study in Paris, but when Matthew Carlton comes into her life, her dream changes direction. Attraction sparks between them, but Matt’s behaviour is strangely inconsistent. Anna is shocked when she discovers the reason and is sure there is no future for them. Can Paris work its magic and make her dream come true?

A huge thank you to everyone who voted for me in the Preditors and Editors 2012 Poll. When voting ended last Monday, 'Her Only Option' was in 1st place in the Romance Novel Category! The ‘official’ announcement of the results hasn’t yet been made but hopefully, once everything has been checked and verified, I’ll retain that top place.

Six Sentence Sunday

Another excerpt from my latest release, “Her Only Option” set in Egypt. After Neve and Ross return from the tunnel to the burial chamber, he kisses her, and tells her he wants to make love to her.

Ross caught both her hands in his and laughed. “I don’t mean now or here, especially not with all those ancient figures on the wall watching us. I’d prefer somewhere more comfortable, when we have all the time in the world.”

The word ‘time’ reached into her confused mind and, wrenching her hands from Ross’s grasp, she looked at her watch. “It’s quarter to five—I have to get back to the ship—I can’t miss the sailing.” She swung round to the exit from the burial chamber.

I’d be very grateful if you would spare a couple of minutes to vote for ‘Her Only Option’ in the Preditors and Editors Reader at http://critters.org/predpoll/novelr.shtml (and don’t forget the spam control at the bottom of the page!)  Many thanks!

‘Her Only Option’ received another 5* review this week: "Yet another wonderful story from Paula Martin. Loved the characters and the twists and turns of the story which included a bit of mystery this time. As part of the backdrop, enjoyed the look at the Egyptian tourist and archaeological scenes."

'Her Only Option’ is available from Whiskey Creek Press and from Amazon, as e-book or paperback.

Six Sentence Sunday

Another excerpt from my latest release, “Her Only Option” set in Egypt. After Neve and Ross return from the tunnel to the burial chamber, he kisses her.

Even in the dim light, the seductive gaze from his blue eyes made her heart jerk. He leaned forward and planted gentle kisses along her jawline until he reached her earlobe.

“I want to make love to you,” he whispered into her ear.

The sheer incongruity of what they were doing and where they were broke into her consciousness and panic surfaced, a panic she couldn’t define or understand.

“No, we can’t.” She put her palms against his shoulders to push him away.

P.S. I’d be very grateful if you would spare a couple of minutes to vote for ‘Her Only Option’ in the Preditors and Editors Reader Poll at http://critters.org/predpoll/novelr.shtml (and don’t forget the spam control at the bottom of the page!)  Many thanks!

The latest 5* review on Amazon says: I really enjoyed this - a great blend of strong, believable characters, a compelling storyline, bursting with mystery, intrigue, and romance ... Well researched and beautifully set against the backdrop of the River Nile, with Egypt, both ancient and modern, adding another, absorbing dimension to the book. Would thoroughly recommend - takes you to another world, without leaving home!

Blurb: Neve Dalton loves her job as a tour guide on a River Nile cruise ship as much as she values her independence. She isn’t ready to settle down with her Egyptian boyfriend, despite his repeated proposals and his father’s desire to see him married.
Nor is she ready to meet Ross McAllister, a compelling and fascinating archaeologist. She struggles against her growing attraction to him until she can no longer ignore what her heart is telling her. This is the man who sets her soul on fire.
When she starts receiving cryptic messages, and Ross’s work in the famous Valley of the Kings is threatened, Neve has to make a heart-breaking and life-changing decision which she feels is her only option.
Can they discover whose enmity is forcing them apart before it’s too late?

Six Sentence Sunday

Many thanks for all your comments each week.

This week I’m continuing Neve’s second meeting with Ross McAllister, who has just revealed who he is. Neve is disbelieving, saying Professor McAllister had a beard and was much older ...

“Yeah, I got rid of the beard a couple of weeks ago. Everyone says it’s taken ten years off me, although I’m not altogether sure it’s a good thing because people expect archaeologists to look older, for some reason.” He glanced round as the morning sun edged above the hills on the east side of the valley, and lifted his right hand to don the hat he was holding.

Neve knew immediately that, beard or no beard, he really was Ross McAllister. He’d worn the wide-brimmed beige fedora, always slightly tilted, on every photo she’d seen of him and it hid most of his dark hair which was part of the reason she hadn’t recognised him.

Oh my God, she breathed inwardly, as she frantically tried to remember her scathing remarks the previous day.

P.S. If you scroll down to my previous post, you can find a short excerpt from a later chapter!

Another excerpt from my recent release, ‘Her Only Option’.

After telling her tour group about Professor McAllister’s excavations in Senhotep’s tomb, Neve is alarmed when the annoying man she’d met the previous day says ‘we’ reported the news the previous week. Then he goes on:

“I didn’t introduce myself yesterday, did I? I’m Ross McAllister.”

Her jaw dropped but she gave a short laugh. “No, you’re kidding me. Professor McAllister’s much older than you, and anyway, he has a beard and…”

She tailed off as she visualised the photos she’d seen of Professor McAllister, and realised there was something familiar about his eyes which returned her startled look with an amused smile.

Oops, so now she’ll have to backtrack…

Six Sentence Sunday

Another six from my recently released 'Her Only Option'. Today we're jumping forward into Chapter 2. After their fraught conversation on the sundeck, Neve puts the annoying self-styled archaeologist out of her mind. The next day she's with her group in the Valley of the Kings, giving them a brief introduction to the tombs there.

“Is anyone excavating anything today?” one of the her group asked.

“The tomb of Rameses the Second is currently undergoing restoration, and Professor McAllister’s team is investigating a tunnel leading from the burial chamber of Senhotep the First.”

“What are they hoping to find?”

She turned in the direction of the new voice but knew who it was, even before she spotted him. The man she’d met the previous day was standing at the back of her group.

Okay, now she’d show him she knew her facts.

‘Her Only Option’ was released at the beginning of November by Whiskey Creek Press, and is available on Amazon.

My first reviewer says “(Paula) has penned a wonderful tale incorporating a unique story line, romance and just the right amount of conflict for her characters. This is definitely a must read by the brilliant author Paula Martin.”

Another excerpt from my November release, ‘Her Only Option’.

Neve is irritated by the man on the neighbouring ship’s sundeck, who has just made a derogatory comment about cruise ship tour guides.

“So what do you do?” she asked with sugar-coated politeness.

“I’m an archaeologist.”

“Oh, one of those.” She couldn’t stop herself from repeating his earlier words but wished she hadn’t when she saw the lift of his eyebrows followed by an amused glint in his eyes.

“I asked for that, didn’t I?” His grin, showing even white teeth, was disarming and infuriating at the same time.

Six Sentence Sunday

Today I’m starting a series of sixes from my November release, ‘Her Only Option’.

Neve Dalton is a tour guide on one of the Nile cruise ships and, in Chapter 1, she’s taking some ‘time-out’ before her next tour group arrives, and is relaxing on a lounger on the sundeck of the Lady Nadia.

About half an hour later, conscious of something she couldn’t quite define, she half-opened one eye. A broad chest partly hidden by an unbuttoned blue shirt filled her line of vision.

Squinting against the brightness, she saw strong arms and well-formed hands. His slim fingers curled over the top rail of the neighbouring sundeck and she let her gaze travel down the horizontal bars. Her glance took in his strong abdominal muscles, the curve of his slim hips, clad in tight-fitting red swimming trunks and his long, muscular legs.

Mmm, rather nice, was her immediate reaction.

Six more sentences from ‘Changing the Future’. At the end of the first week, Lisa and Paul are forced to meet again when a group of staff go to an Italian restaurant for lunch. It seemed to Lisa that Paul was making deliberate, although veiled, references to their past life together. Back at college, they have another brief spat.

As she turned towards the main door, his voice stopped her. “No references to the past then, Lisa? Not even the good times?”

She stopped, bit her lower lip hard as memories flooded through her, and then looked back at him. “I can only think of the bad times, Paul.”

She caught a glimpse of his small shrug before she pushed open the door and took a deep breath of fresh air.

Blurb: Lisa Marshall is stunned when celebrated volcanologist Paul Hamilton comes back into her life at the college where she now teaches. Despite their acrimonious break-up several years earlier, they soon realise the magnetic attraction between them is stronger than ever. However, the past is still part of the present, not least when Paul discovers Lisa has a young son. They can’t change that past, but will it take a volcanic eruption to help them change the future?

“You’re saying I lied?”

“You said you didn’t remember where we first met, but I don’t believe you’ve forgotten Luke’s party.”

Her cheeks grew hot because they’d shared their memories of that night so many times, but now attack was her best means of defence. “You were deliberately trying to embarrass me.”

“You probably won’t believe me but actually I said it without thinking.”

“And you also mentioned Ralph and Berlin without thinking, did you?”

It seemed to Lisa that Paul was making deliberate, although veiled, references to their past life together. Back at college, she accosts him:

“What kind of game are you playing, Paul?”

He stopped, one foot still on the bottom step, and looked back. “What do you mean?”

After a quick glance around the lobby to make sure no-one was in earshot, she forced herself to look directly at him. “Last Monday you said we should forget about the past.”

“I suppose it’s inevitable there are going to be reminders from time to time—and at least I didn’t lie about anything.”

Six Sentence Sunday

Another six from my contemporary romance, ‘Changing the Future’.

Paul was stunned to see Lisa at Hillside College. It was the last place he’d expected to meet her again. They’d had a brief and curt conversation when they’d first met earlier in the day. At the end of the afternoon, he goes to see her. This is from his POV and he speaks first.

“We need to talk.”
“Do we?”
He couldn’t tell whether the expression in her dark eyes was uncertain or icy cold. “Yes, I didn’t know you were at Hillside, otherwise…”
Now there was no mistaking her hostile glare. “Otherwise you wouldn’t have come a million miles near here?”

The latest review said:

“I really liked both these characters. Assumptions, pride, and hurt feelings ruined their wonderful relationship five years ago. But that underlying love they felt for each other then hasn't disappeared. It's just been buried deep under hurt feelings. But they're both adults and professionals and work really hard to maintain a decent relationship at school...but that quickly morphs into something more for them. That chemistry is still there.”

Six Sentence Sunday

Another six sentences from my new novel, 'Changing the Future' which was released last month.

After a short, curt conversation with Paul, Lisa returns to her office.

Why was she allowing him to have this effect on her? Their relationship was over; everything had ended the day she came back from Berlin. She shuddered, remembering the accusations, the anger, and then the agonising pain.

Hardly surprising that he’d said she wouldn’t want to reminisce about ‘old times’. She didn’t even want to be reminded, let alone talk about what had happened.

It was bad enough to realise the very nearness of him had sent tremors quivering through her, just as it always had.

Six Sentence Sunday

Another six from my new novel, 'Changing the Future' which will be released in three days' time (May 15th - woohoo!) by Rebecca J. Vickery Publishing.  Thank you all so much for your fantastic reponses to my first excerpt last Sunday.

Last week, Lisa was incredulous when she realised the man walking across the college campus was Paul.

For an insane moment, she wanted to run towards him, be scooped up in his arms again, see the laughter in his blue eyes, feel his soft and sensual mouth against hers.

Stunned by her reaction, by feelings she thought she’d totally suppressed, she stopped abruptly. Another thirty seconds and they’d come face-to-face. Total panic made her heart thump against her ribs.

“I-I’ve just remembered—er, I need some—some class lists.” Without waiting for Millie to reply, she turned and half-ran back towards the Old House.

Six Sentence Sunday

This month, I'm giving you some sixes from my new novel, 'Changing the Future', due for release on May 15th by Rebecca J Vickery Publishing. Here are six from page 2.

As Lisa’s gaze moved to the man walking across the lawn with Fiona, she frowned. There was something familiar about the tall, slim figure—the way he walked, and the way he tilted his head as he listened to Fiona.

Don’t be stupid, she told herself, but still couldn’t take her eyes off him. As the gap between them lessened, her blood started to run cold. It wasn’t—it couldn’t possibly be…

The man lifted his hand to flick back a stray strand of light brown hair from his forehead and she knew it was Paul.

Here is the 'blurb' for Changing the Future:

Six Sentence Sunday

Six more from my contemporary romance 'Fragrance of Violets', continued from last week. Abbey surprised Jack in their Paris hotel room by appearing in a see-through baby-doll outfit which he proceeded to remove.

As Jack bent his head to kiss one of her nipples, Abbey gasped and her back arched involuntarily. He put his arms round her quickly to stop her from falling backwards and then continued his tongue’s exploration of her hard nipple. Shafts of exquisite pleasure shot through her and she tightened her grip on his shoulders, let her head go back and closed her eyes, surrendering to the thrilling arousal of all her senses.

She was startled when he suddenly broke away, then smiled as he picked her up and carried her to the bed.

“I’ve fantasised about this, about you carrying me to bed.”

“I’ve fantasised about a damn sight more than this,” he replied with a sudden chuckle.

'Fragrance of Violets' is available from Whiskey Creek Press and Amazon.

Thank you for all your comments about Abbey and Jack during the past few weeks. Next week, I shall be introducing some excerpts from my May release, 'Changing the Future'.

Six Sentence Sunday

Six more from my contemporary romance 'Fragrance of Violets', continued from last week when Abbey surprised Jack in their Paris hotel room by appearing in a see-through baby-doll outfit.

Their kiss deepened as his hands moved down her back, then round her hips and slowly upwards again.

Her head went back and a small moan escaped her throat as she surrendered to the delicious feel of his hands through the silky baby-doll top.

“Not sure I can undo this clasp,” he muttered.

She loved his frown of concentration as he fumbled slightly with the fastening, but once he’d managed to open it he slid the flimsy top off her shoulders until it fell to the floor. All the time he was looking down at her breasts.

“God, you’re beautiful,” he breathed.

Six more from my contemporary romance 'Fragrance of Violets'.

Abbey has joined Jack in Paris, but he thinks she's still uncertain about their relationship. While she's in the bathroom getting changed, he tells himself he'll have to take thing slowly - until Abbey appears in a more-than-sex red baby-doll outfit.

“You like?” she asked teasingly.

“Like is an understatement.”

He stood up, started towards her, then stopped, letting his gaze travel the whole length of her. “Jeez, Abbey, I don’t know what to say – “

“Then don’t say anything. Just kiss me and take me to bed.”

Six Sentence Sunday

I was going to have a break from Six Sentence Sunday for the duration of the April A-Z Challenge. However, after a concentrated week of blogging, I decided I'd probably get withdrawal symptoms if I didn't blog on Sunday (the day of rest for the A-Z bloggers).

So here's another six from my recent release Fragrance of Violets. Abbey has joined Jack for a weekend in Paris but he knows she's still uncertain about their relationship. While she's in the bedroom getting changed, he convinces himself he'll have to take things slowly with her. But he's in for a surprise.

“So how do I look?”

Her voice broke into his thoughts and he looked round, then did a double-take at her.

She stood in the doorway, her hand reaching up the doorframe as she stood in the most provocative, seductive pose that exceeded even his wildest fantasy.

She’d let her hair loose so that it cascaded past her shoulders in a delightfully unruly mass. Her red chiffon jacket only partly covered her beautiful breasts and, fastened with just one clasp underneath them, offered a tantalising glimpse of the g-string below.

“Wow!” was all he could say.

Six Sentence Sunday

Another excerpt from 'His Leading Lady.' Jess is posing as her twin sister, Lora. At the end of an evening with Kyle Drummond, the director of Lora's new show, they share a sizzling kiss and then Kyle leaves. (For anyone new to Six Sunday, please look back to my previous Sunday posts.)

As Jess went into the apartment, she caught sight of herself in the hallway mirror.

“Oh God,” she whispered as she brought both her hands up to her flushed cheeks.  For a few moments she couldn’t think straight.  All she could feel was Kyle’s mouth, his tongue, his whole body, and a quiver ran down to somewhere deep inside her.

In the next moment her eyes widened with horror.  How could she have let him kiss her like that?
